At Nakasongola zziwa Rhino sanctuary, Uganda wildlife Authority has been in great joy after receiving a doubt male birth baby Rhinos that were born in two corresponding
Malaika the mother rhino was among the first six rhino to be introduced in Uganda from Florida as a donation from Disney’s Animal Kingdom USA in 2006 at the age of 7 years. However she was brought with her sister rhino Uhuru who also gave birth to her third calf in the sanctuary. These female rhinos were donated with male rhinos which one of them was Hassan that was brought in Uganda at the age of 5 years back then.
Nandi a female rhino is the one which gave birth to both Malaika and Uhuru which of now Malaika has given birth to the fourth baby rhino. Malaika’s offspring include Noelle, Elias and Pipo while Uhuru’s include Nakitoma and Rae Ruparelia.
As soon as this joy reached out to the concerned organization that is Uganda wildlife Authority, same Mwandha the executive director UWA joyfully thanked the conservationists for the work done as well as commenting that Uganda has come along the way since 1983 when Rhinos became extinct in Uganda.
Besides UWA, Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch are working jointly managing the rhino at Ziwa Sanctuary currently.
About Rhinos
Rhinos are one of the big five mammals in the world and Uganda inhabits white and black Rhinos however the world has 5 rhino species including Asian Rhinos, one horned rhino, Sumatran Rhino and Javan Rhino. Rhinos are the second largest land mammal from elephants weighing about 5000kgs and 6000kgs respectively.
Rhinos take a period of about 15-16 months of pregnancy and a group of rhinos is called calf or crash.
Despite the fact that they have high sense of smell and hearing, they have poor sight. Rhinos can only be spotted in Ziwa sanctuary and Entebbe Zoo which is managed by UWEC. Rhinos are also poor swimmers however good at wallowing to modulate their body temperature.
Despite the fact that the new baby rhinos have been added to the family, there has been population increase in number that is 38 individuals including the two in the zoo.
