Uganda Wildlife Authority is a government body that manages and protects Uganda national parks and wildlife reserves within and outside the protected boundaries. UWA started operating in August 1996 by the Uganda Wildlife Statute, which merged the Uganda National Parks Department with the Uganda Game and Fisheries Department.
The body is governed by 9 members who are board of trustees, appointed by the Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities. Every after three years, a new board is selected for instance Sam Mwandha the Executive director since 2018 succeeded Dr. Andrew Seguya who had served two consecutive three years in UWA office.
Since April 2020, UWA manages ten national parks, twelve wildlife reserves, and fourteen wildlife sanctuaries. UWA also provides guidance for five community wildlife areas. To conserve, economically develop and sustainably manage the wildlife and protected areas of Uganda in partnership with neighboring communities and other stakeholders for the benefit of the people of Uganda and the global community.
UWA offices are located on kira road in Kamwokya in the Central Division of the city of Kampala, Uganda’s capital. The offices are in between British commission embassy and Uganda museum.
